Growing with Compost Training ReportThe Community Composting Network’s Growing with Compost training day on green waste composting was the third in a programme of events funded by European Social Funding to train people in community composting. With around forty people present at the Engine Shed, a venue which trains adults with learning disabilities, the morning was packed full with useful, practical information on all aspects of community scale green waste composting. In the afternoon, delegates were taken to two exemplary projects in the
bright Edinburgh sunshine. The first was the Edinburgh Community Backgreens
Initiative, funded by INCREASE, which is in the process of regenerating a
number of derelict tenement backgreens in Gorgie-Dalry into vibrant
community backgreens. This includes facilities for food waste composting and
the project was formally launched by Gillian Smith from the Scottish
Executive. The second visit was to Colinton Community Compost where green waste has been composted for the last twelve years, whilst working with adults with learning disabilities. The project runs a garden waste kerbside collection for nearly 600 local households on behalf of Edinburgh City Council. Further information regarding the event and the the Growing with Compost Toolkit will be available shortly on the CCN website |
