YOOZ, Bellshill, is a valued CRNS member and one of three Environmental Project finalists in the running for the RBS Finding Scotland’s Real Heroes.
Episode four of this year’s Royal Bank of Scotland’s Finding Scotland’s Real Heroes aired in September and paid homage to outstanding Environmental Projects around Scotland. YOOZ, is one of three finalists in the running for the award along with Killie Can Cycle in Killmarnock and Saltburn Woodland in Invergordon.
Since its doors opened 5 years ago, YOOZ has diverted over 6,500 tonnes of waste from landfill by offering a collection service to construction companies, councils, businesses and more, as an alternative to skips. Everything is taken back to the warehouse in Bellshill where the items are resold in their original state, upcycled or recycled, and sold back into the community at a low cost. Approximately 85% is reused and 15% is recycled.
All proceeds go to YOOZ’s parent charity, Active4All, which aims to facilitate inclusion in sport and activities for disabled people and disadvantaged members of society. YOOZ also provides training and upskilling to the long-term unemployed, those with physical and/or mental disabilities and young people.
The programme will feature a short video on YOOZ and the work it does in the community to promote environmental protection and social cohesion. Celebrity interior designer, John Amabile (60 Minute Makeover), is the YOOZ “Star Reporter”, who visited the team in July to get a first-hand look into how the operation works and chat to some staff and volunteers.
Robert Robertson, volunteer and support worker to one of the volunteers, who nominated the company for the award, said:
“I nominated YOOZ and volunteer there in my spare time as I believe in what they are all about. Yooz is all about helping to stop landfill yes… But also engages with supporting agencies to help folk looking for work to find a niche, who would otherwise find it difficult to get back into employment. Yooz helps people with their CVs and can support them to find a permanent job.”
Voting is FREE and can be cast by text (as part of SMS allowance) or online at http://shows.stv.tv/real-heroes/voting/.
PLEASE VOTE FOR YOOZ.
